First Day of School Phobia

Many children are scared of their first day of school. Like adults who are nervous to try something new, children can be scared of something that they have never done. For many children, school is the first time that they will be away from home for an extended period of time. It is also the first time that they will be away from their parents. The most important thing that you can do as a parent is help your child feel comfortable about going to school.

Remember that their fear is rationalized, school is new and unknown. Listen to what your child’s fears are. For most children, it is the thought of going somewhere without their parents. Many schools, especially gradeschools have a night, usually before the first day of school and children and parents can go and see the classroom. If your child is nervous about going to school, take them to their classroom ahead of time. If they know exactly where they are going it might help to ease their fears.

If your child is scared about being with their teacher, you should introduce your child to their teacher. On the night that you visit the classroom, take the time to have your child meet their new teacher. Chances are, his teacher will be extremely friendly and engaging. It is their job afterall. Meeting their teacher will make them feel more comfortable about school.

It would also be helpful if you talked to your child about what to expect while they are at school. Children love to role play, in fact that is one of the best ways that they learn. A few days before school, play with your child and pretend that you are the teacher and they are the student. Remind them to raise their hand and sit quietly during lessons.
